How Pilates Helps to Reduce Back Pain & Improve the Health of Your Spine

Perhaps you have been in pain for years; sitting hurts, walking too much is excruciating, getting up from your seat, or twisting all take your breath away.

Maybe you've been living with a dull ache that has followed you around for as long as you can remember.

For some, back pain comes from an identifiable injury. Your range of movement and confidence in the strength of your back and your ability to perform specific actions, tasks and simple day-to-day activities is compromised.

You may have already tried physical therapy, and you're just not seeing the results you want.

This is where an expert approach to Pilates for back pain can make a huge difference, and start to shift you out of patterns of pain, no matter how old those patterns are.

Pilates as a supplemental, or stand alone practice may significantly reduce back pain

Pilates is a wildly effective and safe method of recovering from back injuries, childbirth and chronic back pain. Discomfort, and pain are idiosyncratic and differ from person to person. That is why it is so important to find an approach to healing back pain through a holistic, consistent and personalized approach, under the guidance of an experienced Pilates trainer.

At JoyMoves we pride ourselves on offering Austin's most seasoned expert Pilates instruction through compassionate, individualized and effective training.

How Pilates Works to Improve Overall Spinal & Back Health

Addressing postural habits & underlying asymmetry

Pilates clients with pain stemming from excessive movement and degeneration of the intervertebral discs and joints can benefit from a consistent private Pilates exercise routine. We'll address any underlying postural asymmetries that can be improved, which will help reduce any habitual over-use injuries that contribute to your pain.

Strengthen the core & connective tissues

We'll strengthen the core, and improve your posture giving your spine more "room to breathe" and move efficiently and painlessly, the way it is meant to move!

Pilates improves strength, flexibility, and suppleness of the muscles of the hip and shoulder girdle as well. Fluid and supported movement (key features in Pilates) through these joints helps prevent unneeded pressure on the vertebral column.

Increasing Your Overall Strength & Mobility

The Pilates program also teaches awareness of movement habits that may stress the spine, and helps the patient change these habits to those that preserve neutral alignment. Awareness of excessive tension and the use of proper focus helps the patient use the body efficiently.

Pilates tips for supporting a healthier spine!

  • Keep moving (intelligently). Staying reasonably active is wildly important for back health. Ask your doctor what modalities of movements they approve for your condition.
  • Talk to your Pilates trianer about your progress, what feels good and what doesn't. Communication matters.
  • Stay consistent! Training once a month will not yield maximum results. Discuss with your Pilates trainer a routine that is sustainable and effective for your unique needs and goals.
  • Be smart about your habits: is your purse 50+ lbs? Does it need to be?
  • Fancy Feet: Are you wearing smart shoes? Are they helping your back? Be honest.
