Group Pilates Reformer Classes
These classes typically have 5 people in them. They are 50-minutes long. The Pilates Reformer is the main apparatus used, however, the Tower/Mat portion of the Reformer and the Pilates MVe™ chair are sometimes integrated into the class.
The class emphasis is on rhythmic, flowing sets of movements which increase strength, flexibility and stamina while also improving alignment, balance, coordination and tone. The result of the workout is a uniformly developed body with strong back and abdominal muscles. There are countless different movements in the Group Pilates Reformer classes and these are performed seated, standing, on all fours, or lying on your back, side or front.
There is a FREE Introductory Class prerequisite described below. Please also note that Group Pilates Reformer classes are open to all members on a first-to-reserve-online, first-served basis. You must be in good health with no special considerations to take this class. That said, drop-ins are permitted subject to space being available.

For safety reasons those students who have not done a Group Pilates Reformer class before at JoyMoves must be there by the time the class starts. All other students are allowed a 5-minute late window.
Group Pilates Reformer Class Types & Levels
- FREE Introductory Class – limit 5 students per class. The FREE Introductory Class orients all clients who are new to Pilates at JoyMoves in the safe operation of the Pilates equipment used in our group classes. The order and choreography of the exercises is reviewed, and we briefly chronicle the history of Joseph H. Pilates. Then we explain how the policies for group Pilates classes work (e.g. pre-purchasing, pre-reservations, cancelling, etc…). Finally, we go through an abridged class that will give you a workout. We touch on all the elements of a standard class, but without the repetition and variations. We need to ensure that all clients, with prior experience outside of JoyMoves or without, are familiar with our choreography and are able to jump into a full Level 1 workout. Because of this, all those new to Pilates at JoyMoves are required to attend a single FREE Introductory Level class, and there are no exceptions. Please forgive us! Occasionally, we suggest that some new clients take a few Private Sessions to build up the needed confidence and skill to seamlessly jump into a Level 1 class. There are also occasions where we explain that a client with special considerations is not a candidate for a group class and needs to stick with Private Sessions. Lastly, please note that this Free Intro class is not for those who have done Privates or Duets at JoyMoves and who, in the opinion of their instructor are ready to take the Level 1 class.
- Group Pilates Reformer – Level 1 (Beginner Level) – limit 5 students per class. This group Pilates class is for those new to Pilates or for those who desire to stay (or for their own safety ‘should’ stay) with the beginning exercises of Pilates. Additional exercises may be taught at the instructor’s discretion. The class is a full-body, level-appropriate workout.
- Group Pilates Reformer – Level 2 (Intermediate Level) – limit 5 students per class.
This Group Pilates Reformer class builds on the exercises from the Level 1 class. Before progressing to a higher level class you should be familiar with the Level 1 class order and exercise names, as well as be able to adequately perform the exercises at that level. This class level provides additional exercises and/or advancement of existing exercises. The exercises become more complex and challenging, and the pace of the class is faster – therefore more strength and stamina are required.
Instructor approval is required to participate in more advanced classes. Typically, it takes students 10 to 15 Level 1 classes before they’re ready to advance.
