Meet Your Pilates & Back Health Expert

Owner & Senior Instructor Shoshana

Shoshana has been offering customized and therapeutically-minded Pilates training, and training Pilates Instructors for well over a decade.

Shoshana's compassionate instruction focuses on applying modern biomechanics and an understanding of physiology to Pilates. She is the Austin Regional Board Member for the Texas Pilates Association for 2015/2016 and, since 2006 has owned the award-winning JoyMoves Pilates studio in Austin, Texas.

Shoshana also helps mentor Pilates apprentices. In 2013 she won Best Pilates Instructor by Austin Fit Magazine. In that same year JoyMoves won best Pilates Studio in Austin.

Prior to her Pilates career, Shoshana worked in the fitness industry for 12 years and was a practicing Occupational Therapist in pediatrics and rehabilitation. She holds a Masters degree in Occupational Therapy from Boston University in addition to her undergraduate degree in Special Education from Syracuse University.

  • In 2010, Shoshana completed the Pilates Excel program in Safe Spine Techniques offered by Rebecca Leone
  • In 2015, she finished a Master's level Pilates teacher training program through Shari Berkowitz's Vertical Workshop
  • Shoshana worked for years as an Occupational Therapist in Rehabilitation and Pediatrics

Pilates improves strength, flexibility, and suppleness of the muscles of the hip and shoulder girdle as well. Fluid and supported movement (key features in Pilates) through these joints helps prevent unneeded pressure on the vertebral column.

 

Increasing Your Overall Strength & Mobility

The Pilates program also teaches awareness of movement habits that may stress the spine, and helps the patient change these habits to those that preserve neutral alignment. Awareness of excessive tension and the use of proper focus helps the patient use the body efficiently.

  • Keep moving (intelligently). Staying reasonably active is wildly important for back health. Ask your doctor what modalities of movements they approve for your condition.
     
  • Talk to your Pilates trianer about your progress, what feels good and what doesn't. Communication matters.
     
  • Stay consistent! Training once a month will not yield maximum results. Discuss with your Pilates trainer a routine that is sustainable and effective for your unique needs and goals.
     
  • Be smart about your habits: is your purse 50+ lbs? Does it need to be?
     
  • Fancy Feet: Are you wearing smart shoes? Are they helping your back? Be honest.
